Overview

The Cancer Registrar is responsible for completing all duties associated with Abstracting, Suspense, Follow-up and Case-finding as directed by the Coordinator. Performs various duties as a supportive function to the Coordinator

Responsibilities

  • Identifies patients diagnosed with malignant and benign disease as found in the cancer registry reportable listing by reviewing through, Pathology reports, HIM Coding list, Radiation therapy patient log and death certificate.
  • Abstracts and code necessary information on all patients diagnosed with malignant and/or benign reportable diseases based upon the guidelines set forth by Commission on Cancer and NJ State Health department.
  • Abstracts and code necessary information on all patients diagnosed with malignant and/or benign reportable diseases based upon the guidelines set forth by Commission on Cancer and NJ State Health department.
  • Meets abstracting productivity guidelines as determined by Program Supervisor and current abstracting workload.
  • Effectively and independently utilizes all appropriate coding and staging manuals to consistently remain in compliance with governing organizations.
  • Review of abstracting is consistently performed to assess data quality prior to submission to governing bodies.
  • Assists the Program Administrator with special studies and projects, as needed.
  • Prepares appropriate patient records for review by physician or outside auditor for special projects.
  • Performs follow-up and obtains additional information on all eligible cancer patients in the registry, as needed.
  • Assists with obtaining follow-up information on eligible cancer patients and enters appropriate data in the registry database.
  • Contacts physicians and other hospitals to gather additional treatment information to complete patient abstracts.
  • Provides support to the Tumor Registrars as needed, with regards to abstracting, case-finding and follow-up.
  • Review applicable Pathology report for CAP (college of American Pathology) compliance by reviewing the scientific data elements mentioned in report.
  • Identifies non-CAP compliance report and inform the supervisor for pathology department review.
  • Provides assistance to Cancer Registry department as needed, with regards to CoC survey or Quality Improvement study.

Qualifications

Education:

NCRA-Accredited Associate Degree Program Required OR

NCRA-Accredited Formal Education Certificate Program Required.

 

Successful completion of 160 hours of work practicum in a CTR-staffed Cancer Registry (may be part of a NCRA-approved program curriculum) AND successful completion of an NCRA-Accredited Associate Degree Program. OR successful completion of an NCRA-Accredited Formal Education Certificate Program AND successful completion of a minimum of an Associate’s degree or equivalent (60 college-level credits).

 

Work Experience:

Three (3) years of tumor registry experience is required.

 

Licenses and Certifications:

Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) required.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint is strongly preferred. Knowledge and experience in computerized data entry. Precis cancer registry software working experience preferred. Detail oriented. Ability to work independently and take direction, when necessary. Strong professional, organizational, and interpersonal skills to effectively relate with all members of the healthcare team.
